Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has reinstated the N100 million monthly subvention to Edo State University, Iyamho, a funding previously withdrawn by the immediate past administration of Godwin Obaseki.
Governor Okpebholo, represented by the Commissioner for Energy and Water Resources, Washington Osifo, made this announcement on Thursday during the institution’s 6th convocation ceremony in Etsako West Local Government Area. He further assured that the government is open to increasing the subvention in the future.
“The N100 million monthly subvention was initially withdrawn by the past administration of Godwin Obaseki,” Okpebholo reiterated.
The governor’s administration has also demonstrated a commitment to revitalizing higher education in the state. In December 2024, the government increased Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma’s monthly subvention from N40 million to N500 million—an allocation significantly higher than what was provided under Obaseki’s tenure.
Okpebholo commended the management of Edo State University for upholding the institution’s vision and lauded parents for their confidence in the lecturers’ ability to guide their wards. He reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to enhancing education in Edo.
570 Students Graduate at Edo State University Convocation
Earlier, the university’s Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Dawood Egbefo, announced that 570 students graduated across various disciplines. He detailed the breakdown as follows:
First-Class Honours: 14
Second-Class Honours (Upper Division): 145
Second-Class Honours (Lower Division): 190
Third-Class Honours: 35
Postgraduate Degrees: 140 (including 20 PhD recipients)
Medical and Surgery Graduates: 46
Congratulating the graduands, Prof. Egbefo encouraged them to uphold the values of excellence, integrity, and innovation instilled in them by the institution.
“This is not the end of your journey but the beginning of a new chapter filled with endless possibilities. Embrace challenges with confidence,” he said.
He urged the graduates to continue learning, growing, and striving to make a meaningful impact on society.
“The future belongs to those who dare to dream, innovate, and work tirelessly to achieve their goals,” Egbefo added.
