Benue State Governor, Hyacinth Alia, issued a statement on Friday accusing Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro (PDP/Benue South) of misinforming the Senate regarding the recent local government elections in the state.
The statement, released by Alia’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, was made available to the News Agency of Nigeria in Makurdi, the state capital.
Governor Alia recalled that during a Senate motion, Moro characterized the elections as a charade and sham and called for the suspension of federal allocations to local councils in Benue.
In his defense, Alia asserted that the elections were conducted in strict adherence to democratic principles and existing electoral laws.
He criticized Moro’s portrayal of the elections, suggesting it stemmed from a personal vendetta rather than a genuine concern for democracy.
“The elections were conducted by the Benue State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC) and were widely recognized as credible and violence-free,” Alia stated.
He accused Moro and his colleagues of pursuing a singular agenda to discredit the current people-oriented administration in Benue instead of addressing the needs of their constituents.
The governor further remarked, “Their collective actions, as usual, seem to serve a singular agenda of discrediting the current people-oriented administration in Benue rather than addressing the needs and concerns of their constituents.”
Alia condemned Moro’s approach in the Senate, describing it as a crooked outing that reflected a pattern of treachery.
He noted that this is not the first instance where Moro and other lawmakers from Benue have attempted to undermine the state administration.
Additionally, Alia dismissed the video used by Moro to support his claims as a poorly orchestrated effort to tarnish the state government’s reputation.
He urged the lawmakers to recognize the consequences of their actions, stating, “It is crucial for these politicians to reflect on their roles and the trust placed in them.
A genuine apology to their constituents and a commitment to serve rather than sabotage could be their path back to relevance.”
