The Bauchi State Police Command has appealed to the organisers of the planned nationwide protest by the “Take It Back Movement” to reconsider their demonstration scheduled for Monday, April 7, citing security concerns and the significance of the date.

In a statement signed by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, CSP Ahmed Mohammed Wakil, the police emphasized the importance of peaceful assembly as a constitutional right. However, they described the timing of the protest as “untimely” and “potentially unpatriotic,” given that it coincides with National Police Day—a day dedicated to honoring the sacrifices of Nigerian police personnel.

“The Command acknowledges the right of citizens to peaceful protest but urges caution and responsibility, especially on a day that holds national importance,” the statement read.

The police expressed concern that the protest organisers had not formally informed security agencies or requested adequate security coverage, which the Command said poses significant risks amid existing tensions.

“This failure to follow due process raises serious security concerns,” the statement continued. “It is imperative that public events of this nature are coordinated with security agencies to prevent threats to public safety and disruption of peace.”

Commissioner of Police, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, has directed all Area Commanders and Divisional Police Officers to increase patrols around strategic locations in anticipation of any disturbances.

He warned that non-compliance with regulations governing public gatherings could lead to consequences for those found responsible for any breach of peace.

While reaffirming its commitment to protecting human rights and freedom of expression, the Command urged the organisers to engage relevant government institutions and submit comprehensive plans for any future protests to facilitate proper security arrangements.

In addition, the police issued an advisory to parents and guardians, urging them to discourage youths from participating in activities that could destabilize the state’s relative peace.

Residents were encouraged to go about their lawful activities and report any suspicious behavior through the Police Rescue Me App or emergency hotlines.

The planned protest by the Take It Back Movement is part of a nationwide campaign demanding governance reforms. The group says the protest aims to address issues such as cyberbullying and the recent emergency declaration in Rivers State.
