The Akwa Ibom State Police Command, announced plans to enforce compliance with third-party insurance policies for vehicle owners across the state, starting February 1.
This was disclosed in a statement issued on Sunday in Uyo by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John.
According to John, the exercise aligns with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, as well as provisions outlined in Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle Third Party Insurance Act.
She emphasized that third-party insurance is a legal requirement for private vehicle owners operating on public roads.
The initiative aims to enhance road user protection, ensure accountability, and promote adherence to traffic laws.
John stated, “From February 1, all vehicles found without valid third-party insurance will be seized and taken to the nearest police station.
Such vehicles will only be released upon the presentation of valid insurance documents.”
The police spokesperson further warned officers involved in the enforcement to maintain professionalism during the exercise.
“The command warns all officers participating in the exercise to avoid unprofessional conducts, particularly extortion,” she added.
Third-party insurance is a mandatory policy that covers legal liabilities for injuries, deaths, or property damage caused to others in accidents involving insured vehicles.
While the policy protects against third-party claims, it does not cover damages to the insured vehicle or injuries sustained by the policyholder.
This move underscores the commitment of the Akwa Ibom State Police Command to ensuring safer roads and compliance with traffic regulations.
