Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has expressed confidence that the club’s record signing, Morgan Rogers, will play a pivotal role in revitalising the Blues as they seek to recover from a disappointing, trophyless campaign.
Speaking during Chelsea’s pre-season tour in Sydney, Alonso described the England international as a “great signing,” highlighting his versatility, creativity and strong understanding with fellow England teammate Cole Palmer.
“Morgan is a great signing for us. He is a player with quality, personality and versatility. His connection with Cole Palmer can be very important for the team,” Alonso said.
Rogers joined Chelsea from Aston Villa in a deal reportedly worth £117 million, making him the most expensive British player in history. The 23-year-old has signed a long-term contract until 2033 and is expected to become a key figure in Alonso’s rebuilding project at Stamford Bridge.
The Chelsea boss said he intends to build a balanced side capable of playing with greater intensity and tactical discipline, adding that Rogers’ ability to operate across multiple attacking positions will provide valuable flexibility.
Alonso also pointed to Rogers’ friendship and on-field chemistry with Palmer as a factor that could help Chelsea become more effective in attack, expressing optimism that the pair will form one of the team’s creative focal points.
The Blues are currently on a pre-season tour of Australia, where Alonso has been working to implement his playing philosophy ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
“There is good energy in the squad. We are working hard to build the team we want, and Morgan will be an important part of that process,” Alonso said.
Chelsea will begin their 2026/27 Premier League season against Fulham on August 24, with expectations high that Rogers’ arrival, alongside Alonso’s appointment, will help restore the club’s competitiveness after last season’s struggles.
