Argentina captain Lionel Messi has described his side’s dramatic 2-1 comeback victory over England in the 2026 FIFA World Cup semi-final as “quite a special one,” citing the long-standing football rivalry and historical significance between the two nations.

The defending champions came from behind to secure their place in the final after England took the lead through Anthony Gordon before late goals from Enzo Fernández and substitute Lautaro Martínez sealed Argentina’s victory. Messi played a decisive role by providing assists for both goals.

Reflecting on the result, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner said the occasion carried added significance beyond football.
“It was quite a special one, especially playing against England with all the historical context. We knew what this match meant, and we’re happy to have reached another World Cup final.”

Messi also praised his teammates for their resilience after falling behind, describing the comeback as a reflection of the squad’s character and determination.

“This team never gives up. We kept believing until the end, and once again we showed what we are capable of.”

Argentina will now face Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey as they bid to retain the title they won in Qatar in 2022. Messi is expected to lead the Albiceleste in what could be the final World Cup match of his illustrious career.
