England captain Harry Kane has expressed his disappointment after the Three Lions’ dramatic 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semi-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, admitting his side tried to protect their lead instead of pushing for a second goal.
England’s hopes of reaching the World Cup final were dashed at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday after the defending champions staged a late comeback.
Thomas Tuchel’s men took the lead in the 55th minute through Anthony Gordon, but instead of building on their advantage, they retreated into a defensive shape that allowed Argentina to dominate possession and dictate the tempo.
The pressure eventually paid off for the South Americans as Enzo Fernández levelled in the 85th minute before substitute Lautaro Martínez headed home the winner in the second minute of stoppage time to seal a dramatic turnaround.
Reacting after the match, Kane admitted England failed to maintain control after taking the lead.
“I’m gutted for the team, the staff, the fans. We played a good game for the majority of it,” Kane said.
“When we went 1-0 up, we seemed to just try to hold on, which at this level is not enough.”
The 32-year-old striker praised his teammates’ efforts throughout the tournament but admitted the defeat was difficult to accept.
“We worked so hard to be here. The lads have given every bit of blood, sweat and tears. To fall short like we did is just gutting.”
Reflecting on England’s campaign, Kane insisted the team remains close to ending its long wait for major tournament success.
“We had a lot of good moments in this tournament. A lot of good games, another semi-final. We talk about knocking on the door. We’re close, we just need to find that missing piece in the final stage of the tournament.”
Kane’s assessment was reflected in England’s second-half performance. After Gordon’s opener, the Three Lions managed just 12 per cent possession as Argentina took complete control of the contest.
The tactical retreat left the Bayern Munich striker isolated against Argentina’s central defensive pairing of Cristian Romero and Lisandro Martínez. Kane failed to register a shot or an assist during his 90 minutes on the pitch as England struggled to mount any meaningful attacking threat.
England will now face France in Saturday’s third-place play-off, while Argentina will meet Spain in Sunday’s World Cup final.
The victory also extended Argentina’s recent dominance over England in World Cup knockout fixtures, having previously eliminated the Three Lions on penalties in the Round of 16 at the 1998 tournament.
