President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has announced a ₦50 million support package for five families affected by the recent abduction incident in Oriire Local Government Area of Ogbomoso, Oyo State.
Akpabio made the announcement during plenary on Wednesday, describing the financial assistance as part of the Senate’s response to the tragedy and a gesture of support for the bereaved families.
According to the Senate President, ₦10 million will be allocated to each of the five families, comprising the relatives of the three servicemen who lost their lives during the rescue operation and the families of the two teachers killed in the incident.
The intervention forms part of the Senate’s efforts to support those affected, as lawmakers also called for intensified assistance for bereaved families and renewed collaboration among security agencies to secure the release of other kidnapped victims across the country.
Meanwhile, Senator Abdul Ningi, while raising a point of order during plenary, urged the Senate to ensure that compensation for victims of recent attacks is extended to all affected Nigerians, warning against any form of discrimination.
He argued that the compensation framework should be comprehensive and inclusive rather than limited to selected categories of victims.
According to Ningi, every citizen who suffered losses as a result of such incidents deserves equal consideration.
