Kaduna State Governor, Uba Sani, has granted clemency to 97 inmates as part of activities commemorating Nigeria’s Democracy Day, underscoring the values of rehabilitation, compassion and second chances in the justice system.
The governor announced the decision during an official ceremony held at the Kaduna State Correctional Centre on Friday. He described the exercise as a reflection of the democratic principles of justice, equity, the rule of law and respect for human dignity.According to Sani, the clemency followed recommendations by the Kaduna State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy and was executed under the constitutional powers vested in the office of the governor.
The beneficiaries included inmates granted outright release, those whose sentences were commuted, and convicts whose fines were paid to facilitate their freedom.Highlighting the significance of redemption within the justice system, the governor said:”While justice must be upheld, we must never lose sight of the transformative power of redemption and the profound impact of second chances.
“Addressing the released inmates, Sani urged them to regard their freedom as both an opportunity for a fresh start and a call to responsible citizenship.”To those being released, this moment signifies not only the gift of freedom but also a profound responsibility. It is an invitation to embrace genuine repentance, engage in lawful conduct, and contribute meaningfully to society as responsible citizens. I urge you to seize this opportunity to become agents of positive change within your families and communities.
“The governor also appealed to community leaders and residents across Kaduna State to support the reintegration of the former inmates into society.”I also implore our traditional rulers, religious leaders, community figures, and all citizens of Kaduna State to welcome these individuals back into society with understanding and support.
Successful reintegration is rooted in acceptance, encouragement, and the provision of opportunities to rebuild lives.”Sani noted that communities become stronger when rehabilitated individuals are given opportunities to rebuild their lives, stressing that balancing justice with mercy contributes to public safety and social cohesion.
He further commended the Judiciary, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Legal Aid Council, security agencies, traditional and religious institutions, civil society groups and other stakeholders for their roles in the success of the initiative. The governor specifically praised the Kaduna State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy for what he described as its professionalism and commitment to ensuring that deserving beneficiaries were identified through a transparent process.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to a humane justice system, Sani stated that Kaduna State would continue to pursue policies where accountability is complemented by compassion and where every citizen is given the opportunity to contribute positively to society.
