President Bola Tinubu has called on Nigerians to remain steadfast in defending the country’s democratic values, urging citizens not to lose faith in the nation’s future despite prevailing challenges.
In his 2026 Democracy Day address delivered on Friday, the President reflected on Nigeria’s democratic journey, paid tribute to the heroes of the June 12 struggle, and outlined his administration’s efforts in tackling insecurity, strengthening the economy, and improving citizens’ welfare.
Tinubu described democracy as a hard-earned achievement that must be protected through collective responsibility, national unity, and active civic participation.
Honouring the sacrifices of pro-democracy activists, the President said Nigeria must never forget those who paid the price for the freedoms citizens enjoy today.
Addressing young Nigerians, Tinubu appealed to them to resist despair and contribute to nation-building.
“Nigeria is your future. Build here,” the President said.
He acknowledged the difficulties facing many Nigerians but insisted that ongoing reforms were designed to lay the foundation for long-term prosperity and inclusive growth.
The President also highlighted efforts by his administration to improve electricity supply, enhance security operations, and expand opportunities for economic participation.
On the security front, Tinubu reaffirmed his government’s commitment to confronting criminal elements threatening national peace and stability.
“Bandits, kidnappers, and sponsors of terror: Surrender or face the full force of the Nigerian State.”
He warned that government would not tolerate continued acts of violence against innocent citizens.
“These windows of surrender will not remain open forever. No mercy will be shown to those who trade in the blood of Nigerians.”
Tinubu further urged Nigerians to embrace constructive engagement in the democratic process, noting that criticism remains an essential feature of democracy.
At the same time, he encouraged citizens not to allow dissatisfaction with current realities to erode their confidence in the country.
The President reiterated that democracy thrives when citizens remain hopeful, united, and committed to national progress.
Democracy Day, observed annually on June 12, commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election widely regarded as Nigeria’s freest and fairest poll. The day honours the struggles and sacrifices of individuals who fought for the restoration of democratic governance in the country.
President Tinubu’s address formed part of activities marking the 2026 Democracy Day celebration, during which he also recognised several heroes and heroines of democracy for their contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development.
