Iran Warns US Escort Plan In Hormuz Could Breach Fragile Ceasefire

Iran has cautioned that any move by the United States to escort commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz would constitute a violation of the existing ceasefire, escalating tensions in an already fragile region.

The warning follows an announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump that Washington intends to begin guiding ships through the strategic waterway—an operation described as a humanitarian effort to assist vessels stranded by ongoing hostilities and blockades.

Iranian officials, however, rejected the plan, insisting that any American involvement in managing or securing maritime traffic in the strait would be seen as interference and a breach of the truce reached earlier in April. The Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route, has remained heavily restricted despite the ceasefire, with Iran maintaining tight control over passage and imposing conditions on vessels seeking access.

Tensions have persisted amid stalled negotiations between both countries, with Tehran warning it would respond to any perceived violation of the agreement. Meanwhile, the U.S. has defended its planned intervention as necessary to restore safe navigation and ease the humanitarian situation affecting thousands of stranded seafarers.

The development underscores the fragile nature of the ceasefire and raises concerns about a potential escalation that could further disrupt global energy supplies and maritime trade.
