President Bola Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the killing of Nigerian soldiers during a terrorist attack on a military base in Benisheikh, Borno State, describing the fallen troops as “unforgettable heroes.”
The attack, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday, targeted soldiers of the 29 Task Force Brigade under Operation HADIN KAI. The Defence Headquarters confirmed the incident, noting that insurgents attempted to breach the camp’s defensive perimeter but were successfully repelled by troops.
According to the military, the soldiers “responded with exceptional courage, professionalism, and superior firepower,” forcing the attackers to retreat. However, it confirmed that “a few” personnel lost their lives during the confrontation.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu commiserated with the Armed Forces and families of the deceased, urging them to remain steadfast despite the loss.
The President praised the bravery of the troops, noting that their actions prevented terrorists from overrunning nearby communities. He also reassured frontline personnel that their sacrifices are recognised and valued by the nation.
“From the reports I have received, our armed forces have been conducting sustained, intense land and air offensives against the insurgents, neutralising many of their fighters and commanders. The insurgents’ counterattack is a sign of desperation,” Tinubu said.
He added, “I extend my condolences to the families of our gallant soldiers… who made the ultimate sacrifice in the defence of our country today in Borno State.”
The President further encouraged military leadership not to be discouraged, urging them to draw strength from national support as operations against insurgent groups continue in the North-East.
The attack underscores the persistent security challenges in Borno State, a region that has remained a hotspot of insurgent activity despite ongoing military offensives.
