President Bola Tinubu is set to inaugurate six major legacy projects executed by the administration of Babajide Sanwo-Olu during his first official visit to Lagos.
The projects will be commissioned over a two-day visit scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Lagos State Government.
Among the key projects lined up for inauguration are the newly constructed Ojota-Opebi Link Bridge, the Lagos State Geographic Information Service (LAGIS) building, and the Lagos Multi-Agency Building in Alausa. Others include the Lagos Fresh Food Hub in Abijo, Ajah, the Tolu Schools Complex in Ajegunle, and the Maracana Stadium, which features 19 mini-football pitches.
Speaking at a press briefing in Alausa on Monday, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotoso, said the projects underscore the Sanwo-Olu administration’s commitment to infrastructure development and improved living standards.
He noted that the projects were designed to address population growth, ease transportation challenges, stimulate economic activities and enhance social welfare.
“The presence of Mr. President in Lagos at this auspicious occasion further reinforces the strong partnership between the federal government and Lagos State,” Omotoso said.
He added, “We are confident that these projects will not only serve the immediate needs of our people but also stand as enduring legacies for generations to come. All the iconic projects represent progress in action and hope for a better future.
“As we prepare for this historic visit, we assure residents of Lagos that all arrangements have been put in place to ensure a smooth, secure, and successful event.
“We urge the public to cooperate with the authorities, especially in areas where there may be temporary traffic adjustments or security protocols.”
Providing further details, Omotoso explained that the Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge was conceived to address traffic congestion across the Ojota, Maryland, Mende, Opebi and Allen corridors, which serve as critical routes linking the mainland to major commercial districts.
He noted that the bridge has created a more direct and efficient connection between Ikeja’s Central Business District and residential areas in Ojota, which previously relied on indirect routes.
“The Opebi-Ojota Link Bridge project was originally conceived over 20 years ago, during the administration of former Lagos Governor Bola Tinubu.
“It was revived and officially flagged off in January 2022 by Governor Sanwo-Olu, making the infrastructure both a legacy project and a continuation of long-term urban planning in Lagos,” he stated.
Omotoso also highlighted the transformation of the Tolu Schools Complex, established in 1981, which comprises multiple primary and secondary schools serving about 20,000 students in Ajegunle.
He said the schools, previously in a state of disrepair, had undergone full regeneration, including the addition of 13 classrooms, a vocational training centre, and new facilities for persons living with disabilities.
“The Tolu Schools complex is now an all-inclusive school where no child will be left behind, with the two newly constructed buildings for People Living with Disability (PLD), which consist of vertical lift facilities to aid movement from the ground floor to the last floor.
“The regenerated schools will bring learning closer to pupils. Proximity in education is not a minor consideration; it is fundamental. When schools are accessible, attendance improves. When attendance improves, learning outcomes improve. And when learning outcomes improve, opportunities expand,” he said.
The Lagos State Infrastructure Asset Management Agency (LASIAMA) will oversee the maintenance of the facility to prevent deterioration.
Omotoso further stated that the Lagos Multi-Agency Building would integrate several government agencies within a single location, thereby improving efficiency and reducing administrative bottlenecks.
On the Lagos Fresh Food Hub, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, said the facility would enhance food distribution within the Eti-Osa corridor and decentralise access to fresh produce.
Also speaking, the Special Adviser on e-GIS, Olajide Babatunde, said the five-storey LAGIS building would serve as a one-stop centre for geospatial mapping, urban planning and land administration services.
The state government assured residents that comprehensive security, logistics and traffic management measures had been put in place to ensure minimal disruption during the president’s visit.
The General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA) disclosed that more than 500 personnel would be deployed across the metropolis to manage traffic and ensure smooth movement.
