A legal practitioner has praised the Federal Government for facilitating the release of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, to enable him attend his late mother’s burial rites.
The lawyer described the decision as a humane and commendable gesture, noting that it reflects respect for cultural and religious obligations, particularly during moments of bereavement.
El-Rufai was granted temporary release from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) following the death of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai. The development came after he had spent over a month in detention over allegations of financial misconduct.
Reacting to the move, the lawyer stated that allowing the former governor to honour his mother’s burial was appropriate and in line with humanitarian considerations. He urged authorities to continue upholding the rule of law while also showing compassion in exceptional circumstances.
According to him, such actions help reinforce public confidence in the justice system, demonstrating that legal processes can be balanced with empathy.
El-Rufai’s release followed widespread reports that the anti-corruption agency approved the arrangement shortly after news of his mother’s death emerged, enabling him to participate in funeral rites in accordance with Islamic tradition.
The ICPC has yet to publicly outline the specific conditions attached to the temporary release, but the case against the former governor is still ongoing, with court proceedings expected to resume at a later date.
