President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has dismissed claims that his administration is pursuing a one-party state, insisting that a strong opposition remains essential to Nigeria’s democratic system.

Speaking amid growing concerns over defections from opposition parties to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the president stressed that pluralism is fundamental to governance and national development.

Tinubu stated that he would never support efforts to undermine Nigeria’s multiparty structure, declaring, “At no time in the past, nor any instance in the present, and no future juncture shall I view the notion of a one-party state as good for Nigeria.”

He further emphasised the importance of political competition, noting that opposition parties play a critical role in holding government accountable and strengthening democratic institutions.

The president’s remarks come amid criticism from opposition figures, who allege that recent defections by key politicians are weakening the political landscape. However, the APC maintains that such movements are voluntary and reflect confidence in the administration’s policies.

Despite the controversy, Tinubu reiterated his commitment to democratic values, maintaining that Nigeria’s political future must remain inclusive and competitive.
