Senate President Godswill Akpabio has reaffirmed strong legislative support for the creation of Anioma State, stating that Asaba is the proposed capital if the plan is realised.

Akpabio made the declaration on Wednesday while addressing party members at the South-South zonal congress of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Asaba, Delta State. The event attracted governors and prominent political stakeholders from across the region.

He noted that the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to the proposal, describing it as part of broader efforts to promote equity, balanced development, and administrative efficiency.

Highlighting the restructuring plan, Akpabio explained that Warri would serve as the capital of the remaining Delta State, citing its strong infrastructure base.

“Warri already has key infrastructure, including an airport, government offices, major oil companies, a seaport, and a stadium,” he said.

The Senate President described the agitation for Anioma State as a longstanding and justified demand rooted in fairness and the need for inclusive development. He also pointed to sustained legislative attention to the proposal, particularly its sponsorship by Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North.

“The Senate fully supports the initiative spearheaded by Senator Ned Nwoko,” Akpabio said. “Anioma state will be created, with Asaba as its capital.”

According to him, the creation of Anioma State would bring governance closer to the people while unlocking new socio-economic opportunities.

“This step will usher in a new era of development and shared prosperity for all constituent communities,” he said. “With Asaba as Anioma state capital, Warri will be the capital of the new Delta.”

Akpabio also called for unity among stakeholders in the South-South region and urged continued support for the Tinubu administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which he said is vital to national cohesion and sustainable growth.

Earlier, Senator Nwoko had disclosed in November 2025 that the Anioma State campaign had gained significant momentum, with constitutional amendment processes underway and presidential backing secured. He added that 97 senators had endorsed the proposal, describing the level of support as unprecedented.
