Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in Zamfara State have arrested a suspect found in possession of 800 rounds of live ammunition during a security operation aimed at curbing the activities of criminal elements in the state.
The arrest was made on March 10 at about 7:50 p.m. along the Gusau–Funtua federal highway following credible intelligence received by police operatives.
According to the police, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Mannir Adam, was intercepted at the Yankara checkpoint while riding a red Boxer motorcycle.
A search conducted by the patrol team led to the discovery of 800 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition for an AK-47 rifle concealed inside the motorcycle’s fuel tank.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly picked up the ammunition from the Bawa area in Saminaka, located in Kaduna State, and was transporting it to Kucheri village in Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
Security sources indicated that the ammunition was suspected to be destined for armed bandits operating in the area.
Police authorities described the arrest as a significant breakthrough in efforts to disrupt the supply of weapons and ammunition to criminal groups terrorising communities in Zamfara and neighbouring states.
The suspect and the recovered ammunition have been taken into custody, while investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected arms-supply network.
The police also urged members of the public to continue providing credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to restore peace and security across the state.
