The Governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo, has ordered the closure of the Nkwo Nnewi Spare Parts Market for one week following traders’ alleged defiance of the state government’s directive to open for business on Mondays.

In a press release issued by the Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Trade and Markets, Evarist Uba, announced the closure on behalf of the governor.

According to the statement, the action followed low compliance with the governor’s order aimed at ending the Monday sit-at-home practice in the state.

“I hereby inform the general public that New Auto Spare Parts Association (NASPA) Market, Nkwo Nnewi, is closed for business,” the statement read.

The government said the order was conveyed by Chief Uba in the company of the Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor; the Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Ben Chiobi; and the Mayor of Nnewi, Echezona Anazodo.

The closure takes effect from midnight on Monday, February 23, 2026, with the market expected to reopen on Monday, March 2, 2026.

Traders and customers have been advised to stay away from the market during the period to avoid issues with law enforcement agencies, while the government warned that further sanctions could follow if substantial compliance is not recorded when the market reopens.

The development comes barely three weeks after Governor Soludo visited the Onitsha Main Market and ordered its closure over similar non-compliance with the directive to end the Monday sit-at-home.
