US Warns Nigerians on Visa Fraud, Overstays; Stricter Scrutiny Likely

The United States Mission in Nigeria has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians over visa fraud and overstays, cautioning that such actions could trigger stricter scrutiny for other applicants.

In a post on X yesterday, the mission stressed that the U.S. visa system is protected through a “rigorous screening process” and urged Nigerians to report any fraudulent visa activities to the appropriate authorities.

“Those who seek to commit fraud bring increased scrutiny on all visa applicants. We protect the U.S. visa system with rigorous screening, and our officers take fraud very seriously,” the post stated. It added, “Nigerians continue to engage legally with the United States as temporary workers, professionals, entrepreneurs, and investors.”

The warning follows a similar advisory issued on February 9, highlighting that repeated overstays by Nigerian travellers remain a major factor in the denial of future visa opportunities. The mission noted that strengthening compliance is essential to safeguarding visa access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.

The caution comes amid long-standing concerns from U.S. consular authorities about visa fraud linked to a small fraction of applications from Nigeria. Previous policy measures to address these issues include reduced visa validity for some Nigerian applicants and more intensive background checks, aimed at maintaining the integrity of the U.S. immigration system.
