Pope Leo XIV has called on Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to protect lives and restore security following a fresh wave of violent attacks across parts of the country.
The Pontiff expressed deep concern over the recent killings in several communities, which reportedly left significant casualties and heightened fears over the nation’s worsening security situation.
The incident, described as one of the deadliest in recent months, has drawn renewed calls for stronger protection for vulnerable populations.
In a message shared on Sunday, the Pope conveyed solidarity with victims and their families.
“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life.”
He added:
“I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism… I likewise hope that the competent Authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen.”
Reports indicate that the violence occurred in Woro village, Kwara State, where gunmen attacked residents, burned properties, and forced many to flee. The attack followed security operations in the area against suspected terrorist elements.
The Pope’s appeal comes amid growing domestic and international concern over persistent insecurity in Nigeria, with renewed calls for security agencies to strengthen response measures and prevent further attacks on communities.
