Human rights organisation, Amnesty International, has called on Nigerian authorities to investigate the killing of a 14-year-old girl struck by a stray bullet in Maiduguri, Borno State.
The organisation made the demand following the incident, which reportedly occurred on Saturday, April 4, when the teenager was hit while inside her home.
In a statement, Amnesty International urged the government to ensure accountability, stressing that “the Nigerian authorities must investigate the reckless use of firearms by the military that led to the killing of the girl.”
According to reports, the victim—identified as a secondary school student—was struck by a bullet allegedly fired during celebratory gunfire at a nearby event.
A source familiar with the incident said the teenager was at home with her family at the time of the tragedy, preparing for a wedding ceremony, when the fatal shot hit her.
Amnesty International described the incident as preventable and called for a “transparent, impartial and effective investigation” to ensure justice and prevent similar occurrences.
The organisation also emphasised the need for improved rules of engagement and greater accountability among security personnel, particularly in civilian areas.
The victim was reportedly buried on Sunday, as grieving family members and residents continue to demand answers over what many have described as a needless loss.
The incident has renewed concerns about the handling of firearms by security operatives and the broader implications for civilian safety in conflict-affected regions.
